Disscom Limited, managing the N2.2 billion renovation of Kwara State Stadium Indoor Sports Hall in Ilorin, has been unresponsive to questions regarding the quality and progress of the work.
Despite attempts by journalists and broadcasters to reach out to Disscom’s management, led by Joseph Ogbaje, no responses have been received, even weeks after he promised to reach out post-Eid Kabir festivities.
Athletes, coaches, and stakeholders in the sports community are worried about the materials and pace of reconstruction at the indoor sports hall. Allegations suggest subpar materials and slow progress, a worrying prospect as national sports tournaments are rumored to be scheduled at the facility later this year.
These concerns have been highlighted on live radio programs, with journalists expressing frustration over the lack of communication with Engr. Ogbaje.
He however said to some journalists that he is seeking permission to speak from the Kwara Sports Commission executive Chairman, Coach Bola Mogaji.
Coach Mogaji, however, could not be reached for his comments on this.
However, the response from Obaje is somehow cofounding considering that the project was awarded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Kwara State.
AbdulQowiy Olododo heads the Ministry as Commissioner, not Coach Mogaji.
The indoor sports hall, upon completion, is intended to meet international standards for hosting various sports. This project is part of the state government’s efforts, spearheaded by Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq, to revamp sporting infrastructure in Kwara.
Governor Abdulrazaq emphasizes quality work within the stadium, yet stakeholders question the output by Disscom, pointing out it falls short of the standards set by the late George Innih in 1974 when he constructed the iconic Kwara State Stadium.
The stadium refurbishment involves replacing the old wooden flooring, renovating walls, and revamping the ceilings. Concerns linger about the choice of materials for the flooring and overall upgrade, especially for sports like basketball and badminton.
The footprint of Disscom Limited online is minimal, with only one entry found on NG-Check.com, raising uncertainty about their credentials and history. The disparity in addresses between the company and the project site adds to the ambiguity surrounding this renovation endeavor.
