Media centre of the Kwara State Stadium has come under fresh attack from suspected burglars in what observers say is now becoming a rampant vandalisation of the sports facility.
In the fresh items reportedly stolen were air conditioners, Ceiling Fans, wires sockets and electrical circuitries, all estimated to cost milkions of naira.
The theft is a set back to the state government’s intensive renovation projects in the stadium.
In a bid to make the stadium a thriving sports city, the state government has embarked on multibillion naira renovation, rebuilding and retooling projects that includes the indoor sports hall, the handball, squash and tennis facilities.
The attack has provoked worries and concerns from critical stakeholders in the sporting community in Kwara.
Reacting to the incident, Kwara State Chapter of Sports writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, have expressed dismay, saying that the vandalism has become routine.
Media Centre of the state’s stadium complex was among the facilities recently renovated by the state government ahead of the commencement of the on going leagues, SWAN observed.
In a statement jointly signed by the chairman, Ayodeji Ismail and Secretary Dare Kuti, SWAN called for improved security within and around the stadium to guarantee the safety of not only the facilities but also business, athletes and spectators.
“SWAN is disturbed with the frequent vandalisation and stealing of items and tools at the media centre of the state’s stadium complex.
“The development is a huge set back to the stadium media equipment”, the statement read.
SWAN Called on relevant stakeholders and concerned authorities to, as a matter of urgency, improve security around these critical infrastructure in the stadium to justify the huge investment of the state government.
