Muktar Tolani Shagaya is a Nigerian politician, entrepreneur, renewable energy specialist, international development worker, philanthropist, and Member representing Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency at the National Assembly.

Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, into the prominent Shagaya Family, known for their strong values in both Islamic and Western education, as well as their commitment to community development.

Muktar Shagaya obtained his first school leaving certificate at Lebanese Community School, Yaba, Lagos State, afterward, he had a brief stint at Adesoye College, Offa, Kwara State, he then proceeded to Rockwell College, Tipperary, Ireland, and then Malvern College, Worcestershire, United Kingdom to obtain A-Level/AS & GCSE. Tolani holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International relations from the University of Plymouth. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in International Development and Development Management in the United Kingdom from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

Muktar Shagaya began his professional career as an Intern at the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria), after which he also interned at AMG Petro Energy to gain more knowledge and experience in the energy industry in Nigeria. He also has some experience as a Junior Assistant at the Infrastructure Bank Plc. He went ahead to take on the role of Business Development Manager at Karmod Nigeria Fabricated Technologies, Nigeria’s foremost brand in the prefabricated building sector.

He developed an interest in the renewable energy sector and international development work and decided to work in that sector as a Project Officer/Energy Associate at the Rural Electrification Agency, the Implementing Agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria tasked with electrification of rural and unserved communities. While at the agency, Muktar Shagaya worked on several projects including the World Bank-sponsored FADAMA project and the Nigeria Electrification Project. Muktar is an executive director at Asolar Systems Nigeria Limited, one of Nigeria’s leading providers of alternative clean energy solutions. He is also the founder of LTBL Solar Company.

Muktar Shagaya is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress. He declared his intention to contest for a seat in the Federal House of Representatives (Nigeria) On 5th May, 2022, He picked up his nomination form to represent his constituency. On May 27, 2022, Muktar emerged as the All Progressive Congress (APC) House of Representatives candidate for the Asa/Ilorin West federal constituency in Kwara State for the 2023 general elections.

He was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) where Shagaya polled a total vote of 59,019, to defeat his closest contestant Ibrahim Ajia of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got a total of 45,172 votes.

Since winning the election, Muktar Shagaya has not only solidified his position but has also been actively involved in legislative activities. He has sponsored bills and motions aimed at advancing the welfare of his constituents and Nigerians, aligning closely with his agenda.

Notably, he currently holds the role of Deputy Chairman in the House Committee on Basic Education & Services, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping basic education policies and reforms. He is also a member of the House Committee on Defence, Emergency and Disaster Management, Environment, ICT, Electoral Matters, Ecological Funds, Petroleum Upstream, NASENI, and Others
